Media, Techniques & Inquiry For Secondary School

In this class we assess our knowledge with working with secondary level children in an art classroom. This includes a fully taught unit created and presented by me and working within a high school over the span of one month.

CPS Trip : Curie Metro High School

As a class, all of the students in art 211 took a trip to the Chicago Public Schools. I, along with 12 other students, attended a day at Curie Metro High School. We spent the day interacting with students and getting a look into what education is like in the Chicagoland area. There was a wide variety of students with different backgrounds and there was a lot to learn about education with a diverse student body.

LeRoy High School

Over the course of the 2024 spring semester, I was able to spend a lot of time at LeRoy High School. I was able to create my own month long lesson for students to create graphite portraits. Students were tasked to find a photo of themselves or somebody of personal importance to them to create an identity piece.

Students completed a value worksheet as well as a work in progress slide, artist statement and artist worksheet.

Lessons and Activities

PAL 1

Attended Student Gallaries

I attended Student Galleries to attend a show displayed by a graduating MFA student of 2024. The student explained his exhibition, The Silent Shepard, and how it connected back to his past living abroad and moving to the United States dealing with capitalism. We were able to ask questions and learned a lot about his creative process.

Read : No Longer Human

I read the book No Longer Human, written by Osamu Dazai. The book outlined the struggles of depression and not fitting into the status quo throughout adolescence and adulthood. It encouraged me to think about the human emotional standpoint in a different way, providing some interesting ideas for my artwork.

Note Taking

As a part of the Student Access and Accommodation Service through ISU, I took and uploaded detailed notes for my art history course to provide for student use.

HOIC

I attended and helped in the hosting of The Heart of Illinois Conference at Illinois State. I was able to help Art 309 students of ISU present their lessons and work with students to check for understanding and help with their work. Students attending come from a multitude of different districts and display their own artwork as well as attending workshops hosted by ISU students.
